NO LIMITS International Theatre Festival

9.-18. November 2017 in Berlin
HAU Hebbel am Ufer - Theater Thikwa/F40 - Ballhaus Ost

NO LIMITS 2017 Plakatmotiv - Weinrote Hände halten Schilder und Transparente hoch. Darauf stehen die Spielorte.

What is political in the performative arts by and with persons with disabilities? The NO LIMITS festival looks for strategies with which artists with disabilities work politically on stage.

How can one react to circumstances that might once again restrict social diversity or the rights of minorities? This can be a direct reaction to the impending aggravation of the political climate. Or the political can be articulated by asserting an identity or by defending a language. At times theatre with artists with disabilities also becomes political in unexpected places.

Artists from all over Europe and Australia will be presenting ways to meet society's challenges - in political and everyday life. The questions also get treated in the symposium "Take Care", which attempts to form a bridge between art and activism and to present strategies of self-care. At the end we may find a utopia  – or concrete political measures.

Welcome to NO LIMITS 2017 in Berlin!

We are looking forward to your visit!

"The limits of my language mean the limits of my world." With this sentence in the back of his head director and artist Wojtek Ziemilski started working on a piece for four performers with hearing impairments. And he realised how true this sentence actually is. His own language appeared to him increasingly inadequate. When people talk to each other in sign language, they look into each other’s eyes and not at their hands. Their language is more than a sequence of mechanical hand signs – they speak with their entire body. Consequently sign language has become the perfect dramatic medium for Ziemilski, as a sort of performance quite similar to dance.

More +

In "Jeden gest" four women and men tell their personal stories. They convey how their hearing impairment affects their lives and how they deal with their situation. All of them found it difficult in their childhood to adapt to the world of those who could hear and who perceived not hearing as a deficit. They had to learn lip reading. Sign language was strictly prohibited. Only in secret the children talked to each other in sign language. Sign language for them means freedom. But "Jeden gest" is more than just an interesting lesson about the reality of a minority. This performance takes the audience on a journey of a fascinating, unknown world of language. A world in which communication is an event of gesture, facial expressions, rhythm and movement – something that has to be seen in order to be understood.

Is it possible to depict trauma? Erkan Özgen’s Video "Wonderland” explores this question by having 13-year-old Mohammed report about his experiences as a refugee. Together with his family Mohammed used to live in the city of Kobane in northern Syria, which resisted the attacks of IS militants for 107 days. As he can neither see nor hear Mohammed uses his body, exclusively, to convey his traumatic experiences – vivid, full of energy, without obvious sadness. He confronts us with what he himself had to live through on this escape from the IS. These are experiences, which we would not be able to withstand even if we only dreamt about them. His performance throws us as viewers back upon ourselves and questions the concept of humanity.

More +

"Wonderland" shows how impossible it is to convey war, conflicts and pain to those who have never made these experiences and how the audience has to construct these experiences from their own subjective perspective. Taking this point of view the title also comes to reference the space of imagination and the importance of making the unspeakable more tangible. „Wonderland" was shown at the Artists-at-Risk Pavilion in Athens in 2017 and is among the most discussed films at the 15th Istanbul Biennial.

Symposium
English and German with simultaneous translation into German and English and German audio description.

The future starts now: A three-day symposium offering lectures, performances, talks and controversial perspectives concerning care. In this case we take care not only as a medical issue but as social, creative and political strategy to address the violent present. In cooperation with theorists, activists and artists with and without disabilities from fields of performance, the arts, political activism, social work, science, healthcare and sex work, "Take Care" is searching for a critical understanding of care that might support a form of political imagination necessary to override the dividing myths of neoliberal individualism.

At NO LIMITS two years ago Dennis Seidel of Hamburg’s "Meine Damen und Herren” both surprised and impressed with his One-Woman-Show "Ordinary Girl”, which is a deeply moving and funny melodrama with a Lynchian streak. Now, in 2017 Dennis Seidel presents a world premiere at NO LIMITS:  His drama "The day Kennedy was murdered and Mimmi Kennedy became president”, which tells the story how president John F. Kennedy was murdered and how the real assassin has to be found.

Besides, two formerly lost sisters find each other. Liv Split is a journalist and reports live from the assassination of John F. Kennedy on 22nd November 1963, in the course of which even she herself becomes a suspect. And then there is also the narrator and some Barbie dolls, which are made to talk by Liv Split. In Dennis Seidel’s premiere there are gunshots, tears, songs, fainting spells and false suspicions … and women are empowered!

In the midst of an onslaught of news reporting about forced migration, climate change, the destabilisation of Europe, rising nationalism and the erosion of human rights, J & J ask exactly the right questions: What are the causes of fear and what effects does fear have on us. How do we deal with it? How could a "space for potential" look like, in which ideas for another future can develop? Taking the "The Art of a Culture of Hope" as their title J&J create a long-term project about our values, our fears, our hopes and about our shared future.

More +

"The Art of a Culture of Hope" consists of three parts: There are the performance evenings "Tender Provocations of Hope and Fear" and there is the workshop format "Space for Hope". The results of these dialogues in turn find their way into the third part, the "Archive of Hope and Fear".

Together with their performers J&J face their own fears in "Tender Provocations of Hope and Fear" and they report on searching, finding, losing and resuscitating hope. In Berlin they and Jeremy Wade invite you to "Tender Provocations of Hope and Fear" – an evening of sharing – with performances, readings and project presentations about experiences with fear and hope. For the NO LIMITS festival J&J, together with Jeremy Wade, have invited several artists and activists with disabilities to share their experiences.

Consciously or subconsciously we touch others and ourselves, we are touched and allow being touched. With their new production tanzbar_bremen turn their attention to this omnipresent, at times unnoticed, sensuous aspect of our being. The trio of dancers explores the most diverse variations and effects of bodily encounters with utmost curiosity. What do moments of physical proximity evoke in us? How do we configure them? How do they shape us and hence our way of moving through life?

More +

Each touch contains a set of particular qualities and information, evokes feelings and provokes intuitive reactions. Tactile events pervade our being together like a language without words. "Touch me" dives right into this communication of the bodies and transforms the various impulses that are contained here into an art of dance, which deals with much more than just the physical.

This piece was developed by the dancers and traces the essence of touch in everyday gestures, in accidental situations and uncommon moments. Effectively it presents a choreographic cosmos of pure magic that invites you to simply share the experience.

A performative offer: Everyone comes together in a festively decorated room in order to celebrate a wedding. The bride has a physical disability – the groom does not. Accordingly all the guests of the bride are also disabled – or: are made disabled. Chance decides who lives through the wedding with a disability and who without. At separate tables the guests celebrate with dance, wedding games, sentimental and less sentimental speeches. For some everything is different, for some everything is normal. But what is "normal"?

More +

The limitation of the body’s abilities becomes a temporary experience for some. The wedding party remains divided into two parts. The question behind all of this is: How does a partnership function if one part of the couple has an advantage over the other from a social point of view, if one of them is intact and the other is not? The audience can see for themselves what a fiction called "disability" does to their own perception and perceptibility.

dorisdean is an independent mix-abled company from North Rhine-Westphalia. Since 2011 they develop performances that deal with humans living together, with communication and with the discomfort of direct interaction. They always draw our attention to the defects, the imperfect in human beings and to stigma.

We lie between two and 200 times per day – depending on what you define as a lie: Untruths, post-facts, exaggerations, omissions, courtesies, empty phrases. But how do you spot a lie? Do gestures and facial expressions subvert the spoken word? In order to find out about the construction of truth "Luegen" pits two actresses against each other – one of them can hear and the other cannot. The stage becomes an experimental space for what is communicated consciously and subconsciously, it becomes a laboratory of authenticity that invites you to decipher, to look more closely and to observe.

The cancan from hell points the way: downwards. Wild figures in flowing gowns, colourful wigs and thick glasses meet here. One of them says: "Don’t be yourself." What would be the alternative anyways, on a stage, in a costume like this? Claude Debussy, Richard Strauss and Maurice Ravel prepare the synthesizer-distorted soundscape of this bizarre world of light and fog, where boundaries dissolve and new communities are formed. The dancers appear like hooded superheroes in a sunken dreamland between ballet postures and rhythmic gymnastics. But at the latest when Giacomo Puccini’s famous aria "Nessun dorma" resounds this evening finds its touching authenticity dispelling all masks.

More +

"Where is down?" this evening asks with ambiguity. So: Where is down? Those who are reminded of Down syndrome are not mistaken: Danza Mobile – also known for the film "Me too – Yo también" – has been active in the area of inclusive dance and  – as one of the few schools in Europe – trains stage dancers with mental disabilities. For "Where is down?" the group collaborated for the first time with the Yugsamas Movement Collective. With impressive results: An evening which like Ravel’s Bolero begins inconspicuously, steps up gradually and ends with fireworks.

After around 180 performances in over 20 countries the HAU coproduction "Disabled Theatre", which was already shown in 2012 on the occasion of the reopening of the HAU, and which was invited to the Berliner Theatertreffen in 2013, returns to Berlin for its last presentations. In this piece Jérôme Bel works with mentally disabled actors of the Theatre HORA from Zürich. The performers share with their audience their own experience of time, their very special physicality and sensibility. A space is created, in which disability is not excluded from the visual and discursive practises  – the marginalised is completely integrated into the aesthetic discourse.

More +

"With Disabled Theatre Bel throws a spotlight onto the dynamics of exclusion, which marginalises those who are seen as unproductive. He shows, how they, on the contrary, question the mechanisms of this representation and how they can point to existence as an undivided form of presence." - Chiara Vecchiarelli

A life without PeterLicht is possible but pointless. Capitalism is not over yet. So there is a certain degree of urgency. PeterLicht, artist and fighter of battles at several fronts, enters the arena of the post-factual age. "Emotionale hört die Signale! Auf zum letzten Verzicht!" is the title of his current concert tour and describes the realm of in-between that PeterLicht is passing through on his way to his next album and his first novel. New texts and songs are developed and tried out live. It is a work in progress. Change.

More +

It is a meeting with old acquaintances in new times. There will also be some songs reflecting the life sensibilities of those cosmopolitan twenty or thirty some-things, which PeterLicht can so accurately mold into a poetic form that confesses to subversive serenity as well as meaning searching melancholy.

PeterLicht’s concerts are happenings and performances with healing effects. He sings and reads and shows his linguistic artistry in every detail – not only brought to full bloom in his song texts but equally so in his texts for the theatre, in his books (the most recent: Lob der Realität) and last but not least, as a regular columnist for Süddeutsche Zeitung.

Why puzzle your brains about the big bang theory, evolution or gravity? May be Earth is just a slice of bread after all. Let’s rather apply ourselves to what really matters in life: Cake, sex, music, fun and unicorns on roller skates.  The multi-transdisciplinary team of barner 16 from Hamburg put us into their time machine and take us on a tour through world history, not without delivering us a proper scientific brainteaser. Thikwa’s successful "evening of dance" enters its forth round! In this series the Thikwa Theatre introduces us to two dance sketches respectively. The open, playful title says it all. Following a motto but without a tightly drawn subject matter choreographers and dancers from Berlin and around the world meet the Thikwa performers: Encounters of a very special kind. This time the theme is "identity". With choreographer Juli Reinartz we explore techno-identities. Is it the idea of technology to make our bodies more perfect and differentiate them even further? May be we can be for each other this technology, this technology that gives our bodies what they need. In the course of this exploration we look at the concept of affinity: Collectivity beyond familiarity. Because we do not know each other, we do not even know ourselves. What do we actually need?

More +

Dream identities or identities that are dreamt of are the focus of the work of choreographer Martin Nachbar. Who would I like to be? Someone real, or may be a totally new character or even a new species? It is a kind of game – or a party with a mirror ball and costumes for dressing up. It is not meant as an escape from reality but as an extension, an opportunity to think, feel and move that which is oneself in new ways. Also it can be seen as a potentially political practice.

A shared room of presence is created by an inclusive group of performers, dances and actors in “The Hype”: Driven and accompanied by the virtuoso play of pianist Philipp Zoubek and under direction of Alexandra Knieps and S.E. Struck (SEE!), this six hour long continuous performance goes through various constellations, tempi and modes of collaboration, of reacting to each other, of navigating space, putting all those present into the perpetual loop of the present.

"The Hype" is about a choreographed temporary community, which creates its inclusive and urging pull guided by intuition, euphoria and collaboration. This performance is staged as a festive ritual and believes in the power of presence and develops a contagious choreography of community. The Hype sparks off contact. The Hype celebrates our condition. The Hype demands pure concentration. The Hype gives us a grooving concert. Again and again. For everyone with everyone. Now. Here.

It is not easy being different. Fred is 50 centimeters tall, made of cloth, naked. A puppet. He wants to be just a normal person with a normal life, part of the real world, with a job and a girlfriend. But it isn’t so simple because nothing here is normal. Because he finds himself in show that is his life. And it is rather full of problems. For example: Why are there always people around him? Is he really dependent on them? And why can’t he be paid for the job that he does at the theatre? Because he then runs the risk of losing his Puppetry Living Allowance - similarities with the integration and participation act are of course strictly coincidental.

"Meet Fred" is a co-operation between two British export hits – inclusive theatre company Hijinx from Cardiff on the one side and Blind Summit from London, one of the most famous puppet theatres in the country, on the other. Most comically and playfully they put questions into the mouth of this puppet, which we all ask ourselves at some point or another: Who am I? Who would I like to be? Is this really my life or am I in the wrong film? Those who do not laugh here must have no diaphragm and those who do not feel touched must have no heart.

Hijinx dedicates these guest performances to actor Martin Vick who was part of the original cast of "Meet Fred" and co-developed the piece. Martin – a wonderful clown performer with Down syndrome – unexpectedly died in December 2016. His role was taken over by his acting colleague Gareth John. In remembrance to their valued friend the role’s name was kept as "Martin".
